Expanded Cinema

Expanded Cinema

The Artist as Design Scientist

I found the chapter in Expanded Cinema to be interesting in the way it conveyed a sense of the process by which a designer works with the culturally inherited modalities of narrative. The notion that a designer can not create with solely new ideas seemed to resonate for in order to construct a design or narrative for persons in contemporary society to understand the inherent meaning one must use the past ideologies of a society as a building block or else one would have to assume the entire audience was indoctrinated and familiar with those new ideas nothing would be conveyed. Through the design process the designer must convey ideas through the use of symbology built upon familiar ideas and lead the audience through an almost evolutionary path of ideas to an understanding of new concepts. In this was the visual understanding that comes about through perception is similar in process to the act of reasoning yet perception gives more a sense of immediacy and impression.
