Tony Conrad and The Flicker

The Flicker, though consisting of only 5 different frames, must be quite fascinating because of its direct effect on the body. If Conrad’s Video, Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain, is any clue to the effect that The Flicker may have had on the audiences that watched it, then I can say that I too would no doubt be fascinated it not at times a little dizzy from watching it.
Conrad said that in the 70s and 80s he was working on further developing his art to produce mind-altering states. His work, Ten Years Alive on the Infinite Plain, makes me very curious as to what more can be done with sound and light to affect one’s mental state. If it is possible to put one in a trance like state or just as easily make someone dizzy, how too can sound and light be used to create healing spaces? Is it possible to use sound and light in such a way as to create a healing space that is not a substitute for other methods, but rather, an addition to other healing arts? What would the differences in effect be on person who is listening to healing sounds emanating from a computer or electronical device and watching images made of light as opposed to a person who is listening to live music and near candlelight let’s say? How would the body respond differently?
