Projection Design

“Projection Design” offers a hands-on approach to the design, planning and execution of digital projections in a variety of performance spaces by using a combination of industry standard and open source research software tools. This blog will serve as an online text for the developing book, "Technical Ecstasy" and link for the web-readings, online tutorials, software resources historical examples, video art and performance examples and essential class communications for Projection Design class taught by Patrick Pagano

What I enjoyed most about this piece was the fact that light, dark, and sound became the focus of the performance. The large scale of the shadows looming among discordant sounds evoked a sense of eeriness. Some of the sounds reminded me of a person dragging their fingernails across a chalkboard and were therefore uncomfortable for me to listen to. And yet, though uncomfortable, the sounds were also intriguing because they were being brought together in a new way with such instruments as electric drills and motors.
The sounds were also intriguing because they were brought out of my casual experience with them in everyday life into a setting that allowed for creative exploration. The music that resulted directly reflected our times. Every day we are surrounded by lawnmowers and construction crews and car noise. Conrad took similar noises and reconstructed them, allowing them to live within a new space. These noises which exist in the background of everyday life, suddenly took center stage, as did our shadows which we so seldom are actually aware of.

Well, to start off, I had problems understanding this piece. This is form a musical perspective. Also seeing it out of context will always skew my thinking. I loved the use of the the silk flowing and the shadows projected on to it. Really gave me a grand scale of the show. The piece starts off with a manipulation for the film projector which I wish they would have taped what was going on with the projection and less of what he was doing with the hammer object. The strange ambient nice put me in a very psychedelic mode and gave me a clue to the ambitions of the artists. The piece continues with more of the almost gowning sound as if a old house was shrinking and expanding under the weather. I can't begin to know where he was going with this, but have a idea after reading that summery of his past. Early 60s and minimalist intentions give me an insight to his mind set (very brief). In conclusion I did enjoy the strangeness of the piece as I enjoy the sounds of modern ambient sounds(within reason).
